Mission Statement
The mission of the Hamilton Engineering program is to equip Title 1 school students with hands-on experience in cutting-edge equipment and advanced engineering methodologies. Our aim is to pave the way for their future achievements in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math careers by participating in three annual STEM-related competitions—JPL, FIRST, and MESA—as well as through an educational component in our Career and Technical Education (CTE) course, where students engage in the principles of engineering.
STEM Equality
Team 5510 is distinguished by its commitment to extending Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) opportunities to the extraordinarily diverse student body of our Title I host school. We are committed to bridging the gap in these fields by fostering an inclusive and supportive atmosphere for demographics that may be underrepresented in STEM fields. Furthermore, our targeted fundraising and grant-writing initiatives are designed to ensure that lack of financial resources is never a barrier to participation, allowing us to support every team members learning experience. Ultimately, our ambitions transcend the scope of individual competitions; we aspire to redefine the landscape of STEM in our community and cultivate the upcoming generation of scientists, engineers, and mathematicians.
Gracious Professionalism
While Team 5510 thrives on competition, we equally value the principle of collaboration and mutual assistance, in line with the fundamentals of the FIRST organization. Our commitment to professionalism manifests both on and off the competition field. During the build season, we often collaborate with other teams, such as Hawthorne High School, sharing knowledge and resources. At competitions, we proactively engage with other competitors, offering assistance and tools whenever possible. A commitment to furthering STEM equality and making learning accessible to all means approaching our competition with a friendly and professional attitude, as well as a willingness to exchange knowledge.
Safety First
Above all else, Team 5510 places the utmost importance on the safety of its members and community. At the start of every year, we require all participants to pass a comprehensive safety quiz that covers essential protocols for both the school and competition settings. Before anyone is permitted to use power tools, they must undergo a thorough authorization process to demonstrate an understanding of the equipment in question. During both club and class meetings, our team leaders consistently reinforce safety guidelines, while our dedicated mentors ensure compliance through oversight of tool usage. In sum, our team is committed not only to teaching engineering but to instilling the principles of safe and responsible engineering as well.
